Is ICL Surgery Safe? Understanding the Risks and Benefits

ICL (Implantable Collamer Lens) surgery is a popular option for correcting vision in people who are not ideal candidates for LASIK or other refractive surgeries. It involves implanting a lens inside the eye to correct vision issues such as myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism. At ASG Eye Hospital, we offer various types of ICL surgery tailored to individual patient needs, ensuring optimal results.

Benefits of ICL Surgery

ICL surgery is highly effective for vision correction. It offers sharp and clear vision, especially for those with high degrees of refractive error. Unlike LASIK, ICL surgery does not involve removing corneal tissue, making it a suitable option for patients with thin corneas. The procedure is reversible, meaning the lens can be removed or replaced if necessary, making it a safe long-term solution.

Risks of ICL Surgery

Though generally safe, ICL surgery, like any procedure, comes with some risks. These include infection, cataract development, or increased intraocular pressure. However, with expert care at ASG Eye Hospital and advancements in surgical techniques, these risks are significantly minimized.

Understanding the types of ICL surgery and consulting with experienced professionals ensures a safe and successful outcome. ASG Eye Hospital remains committed to providing world-class eye care with personalized treatment plans.

Plastic frames are lightweight and available in many colors, while metal frames offer durability and a sleek design. Your choice should align with your lifestyle needs and comfort.

Advanced Keratoconus Treatment at ASG Eye Hospital, Cuttack

Keratoconus is a progressive eye disorder in which the cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, thins and begins to bulge into a cone-like shape. This abnormal shape distorts vision and can lead to significant visual impairment if not treated promptly. At ASG Eye Hospital, recognized as the best eye hospital in Cuttack, we offer advanced treatment options to manage keratoconus effectively and help patients regain clear vision.

Understanding Keratoconus

Keratoconus typically begins in the teenage years or early adulthood and progresses slowly over time. In the early stages, patients may experience mild symptoms, such as slight blurring of vision or increased sensitivity to light. As the condition progresses, the cornea's irregular shape can cause significant visual distortions, leading to difficulties in daily activities such as reading, driving, and recognizing faces.

Causes and Risk Factors

The exact cause of keratoconus is not well understood, but it is believed to be a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Some of the risk factors include:

  • Family History: Having a close relative with keratoconus increases the likelihood of developing the condition.
  • Chronic Eye Rubbing: Frequent eye rubbing, especially in individuals with allergies, can contribute to the progression of keratoconus.
  • Underlying Conditions: Certain systemic conditions, such as Down syndrome and connective tissue disorders, are associated with a higher risk of keratoconus.

Diagnosis of Keratoconus

Early diagnosis is crucial in managing keratoconus effectively. At ASG Eye Hospital, our specialists use advanced diagnostic tools, including corneal topography and pachymetry, to assess the shape and thickness of the cornea. These tests help in detecting keratoconus at its earliest stages, allowing for timely intervention.

Treatment Options for Keratoconus

The treatment for keratoconus depends on the severity of the condition and how much it has progressed. At ASG Eye Hospital, we offer a range of treatment options tailored to each patient’s needs:

  • Corneal Cross-Linking: This minimally invasive procedure is used to strengthen the cornea and halt the progression of keratoconus. It involves applying riboflavin (vitamin B2) drops to the cornea and then activating them with ultraviolet (UV) light. Corneal cross-linking can help prevent further deterioration and stabilize vision.
  • Custom Contact Lenses: In the early stages of keratoconus, specially designed contact lenses, such as rigid gas permeable (RGP) lenses, hybrid lenses, or scleral lenses, can help improve vision by compensating for the irregular shape of the cornea.

  • Corneal Transplantation: In advanced cases where corneal scarring or thinning is severe, a corneal transplant may be necessary. During this procedure, the damaged cornea is replaced with a healthy donor cornea. ASG Eye Hospital in Cuttack is equipped with state-of-the-art facilities for performing corneal transplantation, ensuring the highest standards of care and success rates.

  • Intracorneal Ring Segments (ICRS): These small, crescent-shaped implants are inserted into the cornea to help flatten it and improve vision. ICRS is an option for patients who cannot achieve satisfactory vision with contact lenses.

What are the Signs that Indicate Cataract Surgery is Needed?

Cataracts, a common eye condition where the lens of the eye becomes cloudy, can significantly impair vision over time. Recognizing the signs that indicate cataract surgery may be necessary is crucial for maintaining eye health and quality of life.

One of the most telling signs is blurry or cloudy vision that does not improve with prescription glasses. This is often accompanied by increased sensitivity to light and glare, particularly in bright sunlight or while driving at night. If you find yourself needing brighter light for reading or other activities, this could also be an indication that cataracts are progressing.

Another sign is difficulty seeing at night or in low-light conditions. Cataracts can cause your vision to dim, making night-time driving more challenging and potentially hazardous. You might also notice fading or yellowing of colors, where everything seems less vibrant than before.

Additionally, frequent changes in eyeglass or contact lens prescriptions may suggest that cataracts are advancing. As the cataract develops, it can cause a shift in your vision, necessitating constant updates to your corrective lenses.

If you experience any of these symptoms, it is essential to consult with an eye care professional. Cataract surgery, which involves replacing the cloudy lens with a clear artificial one, is a highly effective procedure that can restore clear vision and significantly improve your quality of life. Early diagnosis and timely surgery are key to preventing further vision loss.

Can Refractive Eye Surgery Correct Astigmatism? Get The Answer

Yes, refractive eye surgery can correct astigmatism. Astigmatism is a common vision condition caused by an irregularly shaped cornea or lens, leading to blurred or distorted vision. Refractive eye surgeries, such as LASIK (Laser-Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis) and PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy), are effective in treating astigmatism by reshaping the cornea to enable light to focus correctly on the retina.

During LASIK, a laser is used to create a flap in the cornea, and then the underlying corneal tissue is reshaped to correct the irregular curvature. In PRK, the cornea’s outer layer is removed before reshaping the corneal tissue. Both procedures are safe and have high success rates, significantly reducing or eliminating astigmatism and improving vision quality. It’s essential to consult with an eye specialist to determine the best treatment option based on individual eye conditions.

Different Types of Cataract Surgery and What to Expect Before, During and After Surgery

Types of Cataract Surgery

  • Phacoemulsification (Phaco): In Phacoemulsification, a small incision (cut) is made (usually around 2-3 mm) in the cornea. then, a tiny probe is inserted into the eye, which emits ultrasound waves. These ultrasound waves break up the cloudy lens (cataract) into small fragments, which are gently suctioned out of the eye. After removing the cataract, an artificial lens called an intraocular lens (IOL) is implanted into the eye to replace the natural lens. The IOL is typically folded and inserted through the same small incision used for phacoemulsification.

  • Extracapsular Cataract Extraction (ECCE): In ECCE, a larger incision (around 10-12 mm) is made in the cornea. The surgeon removes the cloudy lens in one piece, leaving the posterior capsule of the lens intact. This technique is typically used for advanced or dense cataracts that may be difficult to remove using phacoemulsification. Similar to phacoemulsification, an IOL is implanted after the cataract is removed. The incision may require stitches to close.

  • Manual Small-Incision Cataract Surgery (MSICS): MSICS is a variation of ECCE but involves a smaller incision, typically around 6-7 mm. The cataract is manually removed through this incision, and the posterior capsule is left intact. This technique is often used in settings where advanced technology like phacoemulsification or femtosecond lasers may not be available. An IOL is implanted after removing the cataract, similar to the other techniques.

  • Femtosecond Laser-Assisted Cataract Surgery: Procedure: In femtosecond laser-assisted cataract surgery, a femtosecond laser is used to create precise incisions in the cornea and to fragment the cataract. The laser allows for customized incisions and more predictable outcomes compared to manual techniques. An IOL is implanted into the eye after the cataract is removed.

  • Refractive Cataract Surgery: Refractive cataract surgery aims not only to remove the cataract but also to correct refractive errors such as nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism. This can be achieved by selecting a specific type of IOL, such as multifocal or Toric lenses, which address these refractive errors.

5 Key Differences between Squint and Strabismus

Have you ever heard someone say they have a squint or strabismus? These terms might sound complicated, but they simply refer to conditions where the eyes don’t look in the same direction. Many people get confused when it comes to strabismus vs squint. Let’s explore what makes squint different from strabismus and how they affect people’s vision.

Squint Vs Strabismus

Squint, also known as “crossed eyes” or “lazy eye,” happens when one eye looks in a different direction from the other. It can turn inward, outward, upward, or downward. Squint can make it hard for someone to see things properly because the eyes aren’t working together.

Strabismus is like a big umbrella term that covers all sorts of eye misalignment, including squint. It’s when the eyes aren’t lined up the way they should be. Strabismus can happen all the time, or it might come and go. Sometimes, people with strabismus might even have one eye that’s higher or lower than the other.
